Sad to say, sex offenders are in our midst and we may not know it. In fact, they are all over the
country and can be found in every state and every city, and perhaps in almost every town and every neighborhood.
According to social scientists and psychiatrists, there are sexual predators that are very dangerous
and won't ever respond to treatment. Thus, they should be put in prison. These types of villains
are in the US; other countries have their own share of the problem too. What makes it more difficult
and totally risky for the public is that these sexual predators look like anyone else so there is no
way we can be warned just by looking. Sexual predators seem to be average people who blend in with the
residents. You may not be aware of who they are but they could be just anybody -- your neighbor,
the scoutmaster or even one of the members of your church -- and they prey on the innocents and unsuspecting.
Police blotters include many cases of repeat sex offenders. Take the case of Tiffany Souers from South
Carolina. Souers was a Clemson University student. Her killer was known to have committed acts
of sex crimes and violence in Florida. Be careful of your neighbors and be sure that you know them very
well. For all you know, one of your neighbors is like Jerry Hamel, a sexual predator who molested
a 5-year-old boy. Anyone could only be horrified to hear him say, "And then I done it again, and
again."
These sex offenders are mostly men who target children and women since they cannot adequately defend
themselves. In another case, Kara was sleeping at home with her infant son also asleep in his crib on
the other side of the room. Kara awoke at one in the morning to see a dark figure standing in her bedroom's
doorway. Instinctively, Kara screamed, waking her son who then began to cry. Annoyed with the baby’s
noise, the intruder rushed to the crib and hurled the infant to the wall, knocking him unconscious. The
man then repeatedly raped Kara at knife point and even wounded her arms. Before fleeing, he warned Kara
he'd come back and kill them both if ever she talked to the authorities about him. Her infant son survived
the ordeal but suffered permanent hearing loss. When Kara reported her assailant, she learned he also
lived in the same apartment complex and that he was a convicted sex offender. She was not aware
of that for months, he was watching her every day and planning his attack. It took nearly two years before
he was convicted and during that time, he was free and continued to harass Kara. Subsequently, he killed
another woman and was sentenced to life in prison.
According to police reports, about 72% of convicted sex offenders who are released repeat their crimes
while almost 80% say they will still do the same thing when they get the chance. There is danger all
around, especially in places where you least expect it. Protect yourself and your children. Find out
if one of your neighbors is in the sex offenders list.
